KwaZulu-Natal’s Michaela Fletcher shot her way to a fourth place finish in the Sunshine Ladies Tour’s season-opening SuperSport Ladies Challenge at Huddle Park Golf Club this January.

The University of Memphis sophomore fired rounds of 73, 73 and 69 to finish at two under 214, within five strokes of 2017 champion Kim Williams.

Lara Weinstein defeated Eleonora Galletti (74 73 72) and Catherine Lau (73 73 73) from Gauteng in a count-out to seal the runner-up finish at three over 219. Home on a break from the University of Texas, Weinstein posted rounds of 74, 76 and 69.

Fletcher missed a portion of the 2014 season at Memphis due to injury, but in 2015 she won her way all the way through to the NCAA Championship round.

She returned to the course this fall and carded a top five and four top 15 finishes in five falls events, including a fall-best finish of third in the Memphis Intercollegiate with a total score of 220.

“It was such fun to tee it up in the SuperSport Ladies Challenge to get the rust off before I head back to Memphis this weekend,” Fletcher said. “I really enjoyed re-connecting with all the amateurs and playing some competitive golf after the festive break. I didn’t expect to do so well, but once I got in touch with the leaders in the final round, those competitive juices just kicked in.

“Really sad to miss the rest of the season, but I’m looking forward to meeting up with my Lady Tiger teammates to begin our spring season in February. Our first event is the Michigan State's 2017 Central District in Port St. Lucie in Florida, so there is some hard work ahead in the next few weeks.”
