Cynthia Rayner is elected President of WGSA

Former Boland Ladies Golf President Cynthia Rayner was elected Women’s Golf South Africa President at the Annual General Meeting held in Rustenburg last week.    She takes over from Erica Lefson who has been in the chair for the past three years.

Astor Trophy team announced

The Protea team to represent South Africa at the Astor Trophy - formerley the 5 Nations Commonwealth tournamant - was announced by WGSA President Cynthia Rayner at the Samlam SA Women's Amateur Tournament played at Rustenburg Golf Club last week.

The team, pictured here, is left to right Tiffany Avern-Taplin (KZN), Henriette Frylinck and Kim Williams (Gauteng North) Iliska Verwey (Southern Cape) and Bertine Strauss (North West Province).     The non-playing Captain is Sandra Winter, the coach is Val Holland and the manager is Cynthia Rayner.

Underdogs rule at Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur

Match Play golf can be unpredictable and never more so than in today’s semi-final matches at the Sanlam South African Women’s Amateur at Rustenburg Golf Club.

In two tightly fought duels, underdogs Iliska Verwey and Nobuhle Dlamini fought their way past defending champion Kim Williams and local favourite Bertine Strauss while Rustenburg Lady Captain Thelma Dipperaar derailed 10-year-old Woo-Ju Son’s winning march in the B-Division.

RUSTENBURG, North West (12 April 2011) – Ten-year-old Woo-Ju Son from Korea didn’t miss a beat as she rolled in her final putt at the ninth green and flipped her cap to acknowledge the crowd applauding her B-Division victory in the Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

The pint-sized player from Bryanston Golf Club had a stronghold on this tournament at Rustenburg Golf Club from the very first hole.

Verwey keeps her nose ahead at Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur

RUSTENBURG, North West (10 April 2010) – It wasn’t a great round by her standards, but overnight leader Illiska Verwey did enough to hold on to share the early clubhouse lead with Swaziland’s Nobuhle Dlamini, pictured here, in the second round at the Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur Stroke Play Championship.

Dlamini, who won the Match Play title in 2009, dropped just one shot on her way to a four-under-par 68 for a share of the lead with Verwey, whose four bogeys added to a frustrating two over 74 and a 36-hole total of three-under-par 141.

Verwey takes control at Sanlam Women’s SA Amateur

RUSTENBURG, North West (10 April 2010) – Illiska Verwey stamped her authority on the Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Stroke Play Championship when she opened up a yawning gap on her challengers in the first round at Rustenburg Golf Club.

The 22-year-old from Craddock continued her fine run of recent form with a five-under-par 67. She leads by three shots from defending champion Kim Williams, local favourite Bertine Strauss, Monique Smit and Nicole Becker.

RUSTENBURG, North West (7 April 2010) - South Africa’s former number one amateur golfer Bertine Strauss is making her comeback at the Sanlam SA Women’s Amateur Golf Championship after taking time off to concentrate on her studies.

Strauss will tee it up alongside her peers at the Rustenburg Golf Club to challenge in the Stroke Play from 10-12 April and the Match Play from 13-15 April.

Kim Daniels wins the SA Girls' Rose Bowl

Uitenhage’s 15-year old Kim Daniels won the SA Girls’ Rose Bowl at Clovelly Country Club this week when she carded 228 (80, 76, 72)  to finish one stroke ahead of overnight leader Zayb Kippie from Royal Cape – 229 (80, 69, 76).  Izel Pieters finished third on 230 (75, 80, 75).

Iliska Verwey claimed her second consecutive provincial championship at the famous Durban Country Club on Sunday 27 March.   She finished on four under 142 (69, 73) five shots clear of runner-up Kim William to win the KwaZulu Natal championship. Only a week ago, she had picked up the Stroke Play and Match Play trophies at the Western Province Championships.

Iliska wins the double at Clovelly

Former Eastern Cape star Iliska Verwey clinched the double at the Western Province Championships when she overcame top-ranked Kim Williams 4/3 in the 18-hole final played at Clovelly Country Club this week.   She had previously carded a second round course record 66 when she won the stroke play championship on Sunday.

South Africa's Armandt Scholtz and Claudia Lim from Australia lead the Boys and Girls Competitions respectively going into Thursday’s final round of the 54 hole inaugural KeNako South African World Juniors being played at Kingswood Golf Estate, George this week.

South Africa’s Lara Weinstein started well in the Girls Competition getting to four under par for her round at the turn. However a double bogey and two bogeys coming home put paid to any chance the Glendower Golf Club player had of taking the outright lead.

TWENTY COUNTRIES REPRESENTED IN KENAKO SA WORLD JUNIORS

Players from twenty countries, including South Africa, have entered the KeNako South African World Juniors, according to Erica Lefson, the Tournament Director.

The 54 hole stroke play tournament, which is to be played from 8 to 10 March 2011 at Kingswood Golf Estate in George, has attracted entries from eighty five boys and thirty girls all of whom are nineteen years of age or younger.

Williams wins second 2011 provincial championship

Kim Williams picked up her second 2011 provincial stroke play championship trophy when she carded a one-under par 145 to win the Border Championships at East London Golf Club yesterday.  Four strokes back on 149 were four players who tied in the runner-up position - Tiffany Avern-Taplin, Bertine Strauss, Iliska Verwey and Lara Weinstein.

Céline Boutier of Montrouge, France, walked away from the ANNIKA Invitational with her first U.S. win in only her second AJGA tournament. Boutier's second-round 66 proved to be paramount in securing the victory.

Lara is ninth on the leader-board at the Annika after another one-over 73.

Both Lara Weinstein and Izel Pieters returned good scores during the second round of the Annika Invitation being played at the Reunion Resort in Florida, USA this week.      Lara is tied ninth after another one-over 73  - the first time SA has had a player in the top10 ten -  and after a nervous first round, Izel Pieters came back to record a good four-over 76 on this very difficult course.

Iliska is the Eastern Cape Match Play Champion

Cradock’s Iliska Verwey picked up the Eastern Cape Match Play Championship with a 4/3 victory over Vryburg’s Nicole Becker in the 18-hole final played at Port Elizabeth Golf Club yesterday afternoon.      Earlier in the day Iliska had beaten Nicole Fourie 6/4 while Nicole Becker won a closely fought match against Tanica van As at the 19th.

Lynn-Marié Nagel achieves top matric result

Talented all-rounder Lynn-Marié Nagel, a three handicapped player from Pietersburg, achieved an average of  89% with seven distinctions. She also won the subject prize for Economics in Limpopo (98%).  Her other subject marks were:  Afrikaans first language 87%, English first additional language 82%, Mathematics (the real one ) 83%, Business Studies 88%, Accounting 89% and Life Orientation 94%.

Boland girls top the Gauteng North Junior Championship leaderboard

Devonvale Golf Club’s Olivia le Roux carded a two under par 71 to win the shortened Gauteng North Junior Championships played at Wingate Park yesterday.     When the siren sounded for the lightning delay (which turned out to be the end of the event) she was level par after 27 holes.

Top-ranked SA Junior, 16 year-old-Lara Weinstein canned a 10 metre putt to win the 36 hole Western Province Junior Championship played at Durbanville Golf Club yesterday.    She finished on 146 (73, 73), one shot ahead of Mowbray's Sammy Barber on 147 (75, 72).    Kim Daniels (Uitenhage) and Monique Ramkisson (Scottburgh) tied for third position on 150.

Bianca Theron cards 67 in final round at Paarl to win Junior Champs

14-year old Bianca Theron returned a second round of 67 to run away with the Boland Junior Champs  played at Paarl Golf Club this week.   She finished 11 strokes ahead of KZN’s Michaela Fletcher  to clinch this inaugural Junior Championship on 138 (71, 67).  She is seen here receiving her trophy from Pick n Pay's Anna Dewhurst.

Monique Ramkisson scores hole-in-one in Boland Junior Championships

KZN's Moinique Ramkisson scored her first hole-in-one when she aced her nine-iron tee shot at the par three seventh hole at Paarl Golf Club today in the first round of the Boland Junior Championships.      The leader at the half-way stage of this inaugural championship event is Kuilsriver's Bianca Theron who shot a one under par 71, one stroke ahead of KZN's Michaela Fletcher's par 72.

Bertine finishes fifth in Mexico

South Africa’s Bertine Strauss carded a final round of 76 to finish in fifth position at the Mexican Women’s Amateur Championship played at the Club de Golf Vallescondido this week.  The team results are not available but it is unlikely that the SA team will have improved from their fourth place after round three.

USA tied with Mexico at the top of the individual leaderboard

USA’s Lee Lopez carded a one-over par 73 to tie the lead with Mexico’s Margarita Ramos on 223 (+7) when the third round of the Mexican Women’s Amateur Championship was played in New Mexico yesterday.

The South African team fell back one position to fourth place in the team event, and will be focus today on regaining their third place in the final round.

Day two in Mexico was disappointing for the SA Players but they retain their third position in the International Pairs Tournament.   Bertine Strauss is seventh in the individual competition on 158 (78, 80) while Tiffany Avern-Taplin is tied 10th on 162 (79, 83).

SA team 3rd in Mexico and Bertine cracks 7 distinctions in matric!

Bertine Strauss (78) and Tiffany Avern-Taplin (79) put South Africa in third place after round one of the 72 hole Mexican Amateur Championships being played in Mexico City this week.   Bertine's score included a triple drop - but as she heads into round two, she will have forgotten the error as she celebrates her seven distinction matric pass announced today.
